Modems

Now days many people have more than 1 device that they wish to connect to their wireless network.
It is likely that a single person in the US will have a cell phone with Wi-Fi, a tablet, a kindle, and a laptop. Now, multiple the numbers of devices per person times the family members in a single house and you end up with at least 10 wireless devices in most American families.

·         These are the most common questions:
·         How many devices can I connect to my DSL modem?
·         Do we have to pay more?  Is there an additional charge per device?
·         Why does my speed slow down when I connect several devices?

Well, the truth is that, before even getting the answers YOU have to know if your DSL modem even supports a wireless signal.

Let’s take for example Verizon, if you are a Verizon customer, and you have a Westell 2200, or 2100 or 6100, then, you can only connect one device at a time.

But if you have a 7500, 327, or 704 then you can connect several devices to your network.
With most, if not all, wireless modems, you should be able to connect up to 4 computers via Ethernet, and as many wireless devices as you wish, but always keep in mind that the more devices that you connect to your network, the slower your DSL service will be. You speed will be divided by the number of devices connected to your network. For example: if you are paying for 3.0 mb/s and you have 3 or more devices connected to your network, and are currently being used, most likely it would be like having a 1.0 mb/s speed in every device.

Now days, a reasonable speed for DSL would be 7.0 mb/s. A few years ago 1.0 mb/s would have been just great, but with YouTube, Netflix, and any other site that requires streaming, 7.0 mb/s seems to be closer to what we really need.

Now, if there is an extra charge, of course there is not. No matter how many devices you connect to your network, the price for the DSL will remain the same; after all, you are paying for unlimited DSL. So feel free to connect as many devices as you need, but also, turn off the devices that are not being used so that they don’t waste your speed.
